Adequan is a disease modifying osteoarthritic drug (DMOAD) that can slow down the degeneration of cartilage and slow the progression of arthritis. It also acts as a joint lubricant and can reduce inflammation in the joint. Adequan is most effective at preserving cartilage when started early in the disease process. It is administered as an injection under the skin. We recommend an initial 4 week loading dose followed by a tapering dose. You may notice that you can see a difference in activity or lameness once the Adequan is tapered. Some dogs benefit from a dose every other week while others are maintained on a once a month schedule. While this is a product that is FDA approved for dogs and has quite a bit of research supporting high level efficacy and safety, as with any medication, we recommend that if you notice any concerning symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, change in appetite or behavior) that you let us know.
